British Tech Entrepreneur Mike Lynch Reported Missing After Yacht Sinks Off Sicily

Who is Mike Lynch, the Tech Boss Missing in Yacht Sinking?

Mike Lynch, a renowned tech entrepreneur, is among those missing after a superyacht carrying 22 people sank off the coast of Sicily during a violent storm, according to sources close to the situation. Lynch, 59, is best known as the founder of Autonomy Corporation, a UK-based software company. He and his 18-year-old daughter are reportedly among the four British nationals missing, while his wife, Angela Bacares, has been rescued.

The incident also involves two missing Americans and a Canadian. Fifteen people, including a one-year-old child, were rescued by coastguard patrol boats and firefighters from the 56-meter sailing yacht named Bayesian. Tragically, one body was discovered near the wreck, while six others, including Lynch and his daughter, remain unaccounted for.

Mike Lynch gained prominence in the tech world in the mid-90s when he co-founded Autonomy, which became a leading company in the UK tech sector. His contributions to enterprise earned him an OBE (Order of the British Empire) in 2006. Lynch was also appointed to the UK’s Science and Technology Council by then-Prime Minister David Cameron in 2011 and was elected as a fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008 and the Royal Society in 2014.

Earlier this year, Lynch was cleared of all charges in a high-profile trial in the United States, where he faced 15 counts of fraud related to the $11.1 billion sale of Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. After his acquittal, Lynch expressed his desire to return to the UK and resume his work in the tech industry.

The Italian coastguard reported that the Bayesian, flying a British flag, sank around 5:00 am following a violent storm near Porticello, Sicily. The yacht, built in 2008 by Italian shipbuilder Perini, was on a journey that began on August 14 from Milazzo, Sicily. It was last tracked east of Palermo on the evening before the sinking, with reports indicating that a waterspout, similar to a mini-tornado, may have struck the vessel.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, with divers attempting to reach the hull, which now rests 49 meters below the surface. Eight of the survivors, including the young child, were taken to local hospitals and are reported to be in stable condition. The tragic incident is under investigation by the public prosecutor’s office in Termini Imerese.
